Observation meeting of late-sown wheat and shallow-buried drip irrigation technology at Ningjin County

On June 2nd, 2022, an observation meeting of ‘strengthening the late-sown wheat seedlings with science and technology and shallow-buried drip irrigation technology’ was held at demonstration base in Ningjin County. The meeting was hosted by the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops of HAAFS and co-organized by Ningjin Bureau of Agricultural and Rural Affairs and Hebei Guangxiao Agricultural S&T Ltd. A total of 46 people attended the meeting, including leaders and personnel from government departments, HAAFS, business entities, and the news media.


Due to the impact of last year's rare autumn flood, the wheat sowing period was generally delayed, resulting in a poor overall seedling situation, and the task of promoting the transformation of weak seedlings into strong seedlings in spring was arduous.
     
At the meeting, Dr. LI Hui introduced the characteristics of ‘Jimai U80’ and ‘Jimai 325’. ‘Jimai U80’is a high-gluten, water-saving, high-quality and high-yield winter wheat variety, which was approved by the state in 2021. It has strong tillering ability and moderate lodging resistance. The average yield per mu was 604.8 kg in the production test at north distinct of Huanghuai Area from 2018 to 2019. Jimai 325’ is a high-yield, water-saving and wide-adapted winter wheat variety, which was approved by the state in 2016. It has moderate tillering ability, moderate lodging and cold resistance. The average yield per mu was 604 kg in the production test at north distinct of Huanghuai Area from 2014 to 2015. The estimated yield in 2022 is 703 kg per mu.


Researcher JIA Xiuling introduced the management technology in spring. In accordance with the overall principles of ‘early’, ‘promoting’ and ‘preventing’, the shallow-buried drip irrigation and fertigation technology was used. At the reviving stage, the transformation of weak seedlings into strong seedlings was achieved by carrying out early management. At the jointing stage, the increase of the number of ears was achieved by raising water and fertilizer application. At the flowering stage, irrigation guaranteed the number of grains. At the filling stage, foliage spray was used for weight gain of grain.
       
Researcher CUI Yongzeng introduced the cultivation technology of ‘Beidou Navigation + shallow-buried drip irrigation’, which not only achieved precise and high-quality sowing of wheat, but also ensured water and fertilizer saving during irrigation, providing a strong guarantee for increasing wheat production and income.
       
Shallow buried drip irrigation technology showed many advantages in the early growth stage of late-sown winter wheat this year, achieving uniform fertilization, high efficiency of water and fertilizer utilization, a reduction of more than 30% of the total amount of irrigation, and the growth of wheat was significantly better than that of conventional plots. According to the production measurement by experts, the estimated yield of ‘Jimai U80’ is 704.3 kg per mu and the actual harvest yield is expected to increase steadily.


The observation and production measurement meeting focused on the scientific research and new achievements in the field of high-quality wheat of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops, effectively expanded the influence of new varieties, advanced the promotion and application of new varieties and cooperation between research institutes and enterprises, and provided strong variety and technical support for rural revitalization.
