Recently, sweet potato experts from Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops of HAAFS, Liaoning Academy of Agriculture Sciences, and Shijiazhuang Center of Agricultural technology went to Qiuxian, Yuanshi, Xingtang, Dingzhou and Jinzhou to provide sweet potato mid-term management technical guidance and safe production of sweet potato under extreme flood disaster weather. More than 30 experts and sweet potato growers participated in this activity.
The guided area included the hilly traditional sweet potato production area and the plain area of large-scale sweet potato production, involving 5 bases built by the sweet potato research team of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops. Relevant experts and representatives were invited to attend according to the functions and characteristics of each base.
At each base, advice on weed control, drought relief and flood control was given according to local landform; technical guidance was provided on virus disease control, green control of underground pest and safety chemical control in core demonstration field; measures and suggestions of differentiated management were put forward according to characteristics of varieties for the mid-term management of demonstration field of new sweet potato varieties; technical guidance exchange was carried out in the upgrading, transformation and laboratory management of virus-free tissue culture center of Hebei Muze Agriculture and Technology Co.Ltd. and Hebei Haoyang Agriculture and Technology Co.Ltd.. The work of sweet potato virus-free tissue culture technicians trained by Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops was checked.
At each base, performance of varieties newly released by sweet potato research teams of Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops was observed. All the varieties grew normally and the tuber began to expand. ‘Jiyuan 1’ has the best expansion. ‘Jishu 7’ has short vine(suitable for simplified production). ‘Jifen 2’ and ‘Jiyuan 3’ has the tip-tilted vine(suitable for mechanical top control). Experts communicated with technical directors of each base about the middle and late management of the varieties.
Through the investigation, it was found that the heavy rainfall had limited influence on sweet potato production. No water accumulation occurred in the field using deep furrow and large ridge production technology, and only scattered field with small ridge appeared water accumulation. Due to the lack of rain in the early stage, most sweet potato fields have been in different degrees of drought. This rainfall has greatly alleviated the drought in sweet potato fields, and has a good promoting effect on sweet potato production.
