January 5, 2020, the kick-off meeting was held in Shijiazhuang for the national key R&D project “Selection of Varieties and Supporting Cultivation Techniques for Improving Quality and Efficiency of Minor Cereal Grains” and “Genetic Background Evaluation and In-depth Analysis on Core Resources of Minor Crops”. Director Zhang Xinming of Science Development Center, Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs, Vice President Sun Shigang of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Chief Expert Prof. Diao Xianmin of the National Technical System of Millet and Sorghum, Director Zheng Jun of Science and Technology Department, CAAS, and Deputy Director Sun Liyong of Department of Science and Technology of Hebei were presented at the meeting and delivered important speeches. Others who participated in the meeting were project leaders, sub-project leaders, topic leaders and team members altogether 88 persons.
Project “Selection of Varieties and Supporting Cultivation Techniques for Improving Quality and Efficiency of Minor Cereal Grains” is chaired by Prof. Cheng Ruhong of Millet Institute of HAAFS. This project is to tackle the problems in minor cereal crops such as millet, sorghum and highland barley, conducting researches on the ecological adaptability evaluation and layout study for varieties, variety-environment-field management interaction and potential of resources utilization, standard of high quality varieties for special purposes, selection of high yield high efficiency varieties and related cultivation technologies. The implementation of this project is of great significance to the development of HAAFS’ disciplinary like minor crop ecological distribution and crop cultivation physiology. The project “Genetic Background Evaluation and In-depth Analysis on Core Resources of Minor Crops” is hosted by Dr. Tang Sha of Crop Sciences Institute of CAAS, and Dr. Liu Changyou of the Cereal and Oil Crops Institute of HAAFS is responsible for one of its sub-projects.
