Recently, a research paper entitled “Pretreatment of NaCl enhances the drought resistance of cotton by regulating the biosynthesis of carotenoids and abscisic acid” was jointly published online in Frontiers in Environmental Science（IF=5.411）by research teams of Institute of Dryland Farming and Institute of Cotton of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
It was found that soaking seed with NaCl could improve the drought resistance of cotton and promote the elongation of seed hypocotyl and root. The differential expression and functional verification of drought resistance related lutein synthesis genes of cotton were conducted. It was found that soaking seed with NaCl could improve cotton drought resistance by regulating the content of lutein and abscisic acid, which provided a new theoretical basis for the study of drought stress mechanism of cotton and had important practical significance for the development of saline-alkali and drought resistant cotton planting.
