There is a lack of labor force in fruit tree production in China. The traditional orchard soil and tree management are not suitable for mechanized operation, It is urgent to renovate the orchard and establish a labor-saving, light and simplified new orchard cultivation system.
Orchard management in the countries of Europe, America, Japan, etc, has been highly mechanized. Mechanization have been realized to a great extent in various operations such as seedling nursing, orchard construction, flower and fruit thinning, tree pruning, pest control and weeding, harvesting and transportation. In terms of water and fertilizer management, orchards are equipped with sprinkler and drip irrigation facilities. Using computer control, water can be supplied automatically at any time according to soil moisture and water demand of fruit trees.
Shijiazhuang Fruit Tree Institute of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences has long been engaged in the research on water and fertilizer management of fruit trees and efficient cultivation technology of apples. It has won the Second Prize of Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress for its research on fruit tree water saving management and the First Prize of Provincial Entrepreneurship and Technology Promotion in Mountainous Areas for its research work on fruit tree cultivation.
We are looking forwards cooperating with foreign research institutions and researchers in this study. The objective of the project is to identify the optimum shape of tree crown suitable for mechanized operation of orchard, to develop technologies to overcome the orchard re-plantation obstacles and renew the inefficient old orchards, to identify fruit tree varieties and the supporting cultivation techniques suitable for baggless cultivation, to develop orchard machines and supporting cultivation techniques.
