The Observation Tour of Sesame Production and the Seminar on Integration of Three Industries Were Held in Daming County

August 3 to 5, 2020, the field tour on sesame rain-fed and simplified cultivation demonstration and the seminar on three industries integration, sponsored by the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops, were held in Daming County, Handan, Hebei.

More than 80 people participated in the activities including Chief Scientist Zhang Haiyang of the National Characteristic Oil Crop Industry Technology System, Vice Director Zhang Wenli of the Economic Research Center of the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs, Director Xu Cheng of the Rural Science and Technology Division of Hebei Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Vice Director Dong Haiyue of the Planting Industry Division of Hebei Provincial Department of Agricultural and Rural Affairs, Vice President Sun Shigang of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Director Wang Guoyin of Achievement Transformation Division of HAAFS, Deputy Secretary Li Jianfang of Daming County Party Committee, Deputy County Chief Wu Ping, Deputy Chairman Liu Zhenyong, Zhang Aojie, Liu Xiaotao of the CPPCC of Daming County, the post experts and research station leaders of the National Characteristic Oil Crop Industry Technology System of 10 provinces and municipalities, representatives of sesame processing enterprises and sesame growers.

On the morning of August 4, Vice Director Wang Guiqi of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops announced the opening of the field tour and led the participants to Xiezhai Village of Shageda Township, Daming County, visiting the Black Sesame Demonstration Base. This demonstration base was established in 2017 with a initial area of 13ha. Under the guidance of the local government and the technological support of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops of HAAFS, with 4 years of continuous efforts it has been developed into the 667ha black sesame characteristic industrial park by the year 2020. After adopting the institute’s new variety Jiheizhi 2 and the dryland farming, rain-fed and simplified cultivation technologies, the sesame yield increased by 20% - 40%, having accelerated the local standardized and industrialized sesame production and also promoted the development of sesame industry in Handan City and Hebei province.

Chief Scientist Zhang Haiyang and other experts fully affirmed the demonstration base for its excellent performance and agreed that Daming black sesame demonstration base is among the best in the whole county regarding the planting scale, management level and field growth of the plants.

On the afternoon of the same day, Director Li Yan of the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops chaired the seminar on the high efficient planting mode of characteristic oil crops and the integration mode of the primary, secondary and tertiary industry related to the characteristic oil crop production. On the meeting, Zhang Haiyang analyzed the world sesame production and demand status and the advantages of China’s sesame industry. Sun Shigang introduced the history and achievements of sesame research in HAAFS and mentioned that in recent years the Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops established sound cooperative relationship with Daming County and explored the industrial development mode that is government + research institution + enterprise + cooperative ( grower) to realize the integration of three industries by government guiding, research supporting, enterprise promoting and cooperative implementing. He said the establishment of Daming demonstration base is of important significance to the extension of new sesame varieties and technologies and to the increase of farmers’ income and the product quality and benefits of the enterprises. He stressed that we should strengthen the cooperation with governments of different levels, cooperatives and processing enterprises and further optimize the industry development mode. All the participating scientists, leaders and enterprises directors also had in-depth and detailed exchanges of views.

This event has helped in discovering the existing problems and technology demands in the sesame production in Daming County and in clarifying the bottleneck technologies of sesame processing, product development and industry chain extension. The government of Daming County expressed that they would take this event as the opportunity to expand the primary industry, strengthen the secondary industry and improve the tertiary industry, so as to enhance the core competitiveness of the Daming brand.
